Abstract

This paper outlines the physical examination procedure for an injured bird of prey. It is designed for wildlife rehabilitators and includes some basic anatomy, handling tips, common injuries, and record keeping. It is not designed to be a complete anatomical guide, teach all methods of handling, or give treatment guidelines.

Author Biography

Mathias Engelmann, Carolina Raptor Center

Mathias Engelmann is Director of Rehabilitation at Carolina Raptor Center. Born in Munich, Germany, he ‘migrated’ to the United States in 1980. He holds a degree in Biology from the University of North Carolina–Charlotte and has been a full–time raptor rehabilitator since 1983, first as a volunteer and for the past 12 years as a paid staff member.
